Iván Nikoláyevich Kramskói (27 de mayojul./ 8 de junio de 1837greg. - 24 de marzojul./ 5 de abril de 1887greg.) (Ruso: Ива́н Никола́евич Крамско́й fue un pintor y crítico de arte ruso. Fue uno de los inspiradores y el líder inicial de la Sociedad de Exposiciones Artísticas Itinerantes.

Para el artista, comprometido socialmente, los tiempos exigía una nueva imagen de la figura de Cristo, mas humanizado. El cuadro está basado en el retiro de Cristo durante 40 días en el desierto. Está sentado sobre una piedra reflexionando, decidiendo, según el autor, si va a dar el paso de sacrificar su vida por la humanidad. El amanecer al fondo anuncia la toma de una decisión. El cuadro refleja los momentos de duda que padece todo ser humano. El marco del cuadro fue encargado de propio por Kramskoi también tiene su significado. Las esquinas están sujetadas por cuerdas creando lazos en forma de cruz. Con esto el artista quería reforzar la idea del destino ineludible de Cristo.

Con relación a su cuadro de Cristo en el desierto no he conseguido averiguar si él se inspiró en el que pintó V. Grigorievich Perov retratando a Dostoyevsky o fué al revés. Por lo que he leído - ambos están en la misma Galería - fueron pintados el mismo año 1872 y fueron expuestos a la vez en una exposición itinerante.
